Art Show at The Columbus Learning Center!

I am honored to have the opportunity to display some of my work at the Columbus Learning Center as part of an exhibit with fellow members of the Columbus Viewfinders Photography Club.

The Learning Center connects the Indiana University Purdue University Columbus campus and the Ivy Tech Columbus campus. It is full of classrooms and laboratories, used to support thousands of students from both campuses as well as the local community.

The Viewfinders are a group of Photography Enthusiasts located in and around Columbus, Indiana. It’s a great mix – beginners to professionals, and everything in-between. Everyone learns from each other, and we have a blast at every meeting. If you’re not familiar with the Viewfinders, and have an interest in photography, you should come to a meeting. The first meeting is free, and if you decide to join, it’s only $12/year to join!

If you have made the trip to The Learning Center, I’d love some feedback.

If you haven’t made the trip, there’s still time! The show will run through late August. It’s a great, free lunch-hour or after-work diversion. The club has around 30 images hung in the Learning Center.

My works that are displayed include:

‘Downtown Columbus Indiana at Night’ – 16×24 Canvas Gallery Wrap

‘Creepy Spider’ – 24×16 Canvas Gallery Wrap

‘Old Friends’ – 16×24 Canvas Gallery Wrap

‘Ethnic Expo 2010: Festive Indian Dance’ – 16×24 Canvas Gallery Wrap

If you are interested in any of my works, feel free to contact me through the ‘Contact John’ link at the top of the page!

Thanks for taking the time to look!

The Columbus Viewfinders Photography Club met tonight for their October 2011 meeting.

I shared the following image:

Project 365 – The End?

I’ve had a few people ask me recently, why am I no longer posting my Project 365 photos.

Rather than continue to repeat the same answer, I thought I’d post it here.

In late 2010, I was inspired to create my own Project 365, after viewing a few other people undertaking such a project on the internet.

I made it nearly halfway through the year, before realizing, it just wasn’t going to happen for me.

Why?

I have several reasons that attributed to this ‘failure’, however, I learned a lot in the process, so I am willing to chalk the failure up as a ‘life lesson’, and will learn from it.

1) Photography is a passion for me, it’s not a means of making my living. This means I am in it for enjoyment. When getting the day’s photo captured, processed and uploaded becomes a chore, I’m really not enjoying it.

2) I found myself unable to give the project adequate time, which did not do it justice. A snapshot of this, or a snapshot of that, is truly just a snapshot. It isn’t doing justice to the ‘craft’ of photography.

3) I wasn’t taking the time to ‘learn’ daily, as I had initially planned. Sure, sometimes some neat shots came in the process, and sometimes I learned, but not in the ways that I had hoped.

I’m not going to give up photography. It’s in my blood. It will always be an interest, whether I’m lugging around a DSLR with a long lens, or taking a snapshot of my kids with my camera phone to send to Grandma. There will still be blog posts, neat photos, and hopefully, eventually knowledge transfer where I can learn something, and share what I have learned with those following this blog.

But, those posts will, at times, be fewer and further between – but my hope is that the value of said posts will be higher.

June 2011 Viewfinders Meeting Photo Share – ‘Light Painting’

(ADMIN NOTE: I just realized this post has been set as ‘private’ since July 20th, so I am marking it as ‘public’. I missed the July Viewfinders meeting due to a family emergency, so I had no photo shares in July.)

The Columbus Viewfinders Photography Club met tonight for their June, 2011 meeting.

The photo share topic was ‘Light Painting’. I shared the following images:

Coin Entrance

Alley

Friendship Alley in Columbus, Indiana at night

Attendance was a bit on the light side this month, no doubt a result of the nice weather. We discussed the art fair, and different types of filters.

Project 365 – June 19 2011 – Fathers Day – 170 of 365

Vinnie and Emily

Tonight, I took a photo of Emily and Vinnie. They are my reason for celebrating Fathers Day, and really every other day as well.

I’ve been having so much fun with them the last few weeks, my photo updates are coming a little late. For this, I apologize and I will try to do better.

But, they will only grow up once, and they are my priority :) If you’re watching, I hope you don’t mind!

Project 365 – June 18 2011 – Another Droid Photo – 169 of 365

Vinnie

Tonight’s photo was taken with my Droid, and processed in Photoshop Express. Just a slight exposure tweak, and a border added.

This is Vinnie, asleep on the couch. Not every great photo needs to come from an expensive DSLR.

This technically isn’t a ‘great’ photo. But, the memory is important, nonetheless. Vinnie was getting ready to go downstairs and play some pinball. He put one shoe on, and fell asleep. Pinball will just have to wait until tomorrow.

The Truck

Tonight, Vinnie and I played with his truck for awhile. I enjoyed spending time with him and playing with trucks.

Project 365 – June 16 2011 – Baseball – 167 of 365

Baseball

Before this season, I really didn’t know how much I liked baseball.

After attending plenty of little league games, my wife’s softball games, and even an Indians game, I realized, it’s a lot of fun.

This photo was taken at a little league game today. Just before the bat hit the ball. The little league season is almost over. There’s always next year!

Project 365 – June 15 2011 – Gear – 166 of 365

Gear

Lately, you’ve seen a lot of car part pictures. I’m not going to let you down today.

My drivers side power window stopped rolling down and up recently. Turns out, the clutches in this gear assembly wore out. Imagine that, on a car that’s only 17 years old!

Well, for $23/door, I got a new gear with a lifetime warranty. The clutches are the little white plastic pegs. Now, to get to work and change them out…
